The Whisper Plains is a location in the Ignathian Peninsula described as "pine forest and dry red earth and great torn-up tire treads driving right through the middle of the broken-up woodland".[1] The trade roads run through the area, and large lorries (shipping trucks) drive through the area often, despite many routes being unpaved areas where the forest has been cut down to allow them through. Brother Faulkner was born and raised here, and his childhood home is located in the region.

Description[]
The area is polluted and economically depressed, with many abandoned houses. The canals were "unhygienic and polluted".[2] It is an unpleasant place to live due to noise pollution. Faulkner complained that lorries passed through the area often and loudly, and the electricity pylons that ran through the area released a "constant seeping hiss... [so] there was never any opportunity for real comfort or real rest".[1]
In addition to the electricity pylons, there are wind farms in the area ("forty miles from the house where we lived"), where Brother Faulkner's father worked nights. Both suggest a strong presence of The Saint Electric.
Local Lore[]
- A local rumor/folk tale claims that the huge steel pylons are indeed living angels of the Saint Electric, and have at times torn themselves free, whipping their powerlines about and destroying nearby houses and woodlands. This event is seen as a boon, as the story claims that if a house is damaged in such a rampage, the electricity company will be forced to pay a fortune in hush money, allowing the owners to leave and start a new life somewhere nicer.
- Occasionally, waves of false faith activity sweep through the area, often impacting children most strongly. When Faulkner was young, "The Drowning Song" was the relevant phenomenon.
